2.4 Excuses ! (A Skit)
WARMING UP !
Form groups and chat about the following.
1) Do you come to school on time, everyday? (तुम्ही दरदिवशी शाळेत वेळेवर येता का ?)
Ans. Yes, I come to school on time,everyday.
(2) What do you feel, when you are late? (तुम्हांला उशीर होतो, तेव्हा तुम्हांला काय वाटते ? )
Ans. When sometimes I come late I feel very guilty.
(3) What action is taken, in school, on late-comers ? ( उशिरा येणाऱ्यांवर कोणती कारवाई होते ?)
Ans. Our teacher makes the late- comers stand out of the class.
(4) Do you give excuses for your late-coming? Are they true or false? (तुमच्या उशिरा येण्याबद्दल तुम्ही काही सबबी देता का? त्या खऱ्या असतात की खोट्या ? )
Ans. I don’t give excuses for coming late to school.
(5) Why is punctuality so important in life? (आयुष्यात वक्तशीरपणा का महत्त्वाचा असतो ? )
Ans. If we are not punctual, we might miss some opportunities in life. Our work also delays and that affects our success in life.
(2) Reported Speech
Speech or dialogues can be reported in 2 ways – Direct and Indirect.
When exact words of the speaker are reported we call it Direct speech. When
exact words of the speaker are not reported, but just its contents we call it.
Indirect speech.

3) Discuss and write the answers in your own words:
(1) Were the excuses given by Ritesh for his late arrival, true? Give reasons for your response. (रितेशने उशिरा येण्याबद्दलच्या सबबी खऱ्या होत्या का? तुमच्या उत्तराचे समर्थन करा. )
Ans. The excuses given by Ritesh for his late arrival to school were not true.. Following incidents tell us that the excuses were not true:
(1) The man lying and groaning with pain on the pavement started running with the thief.
(2) His description of the dog given in two places is different.
(3) He had not entered the shop before but said that he had left his bag in the shop.
(4) The story of the dog and its owner does not sound convincing.

(4) Report the following in indirect speech.
1) Ritesh: May I come in, Madam?
Ans : Ritesh requested the teacher if he could come in.
(2) Mrs Sen: Ritesh, you are too early for the second period.
Ans : Mrs. Sen told Ritesh that he was too late for the second period.
3) Ritesh: I had left my bag at the shop.
Ans : Ritesh said that he had left his bag at the shop.
(4) Ritesh: I am sorry, Ma’am !
Ans : Ritesh told the teacher that he was very sorry.
(5) Mrs Sen: There’s a story – writing competition.
Ans : Mrs. Sen said that there was a story-writing competition.
